  • Eating Healthy On Campus... Without Breaking The Budget

I went back to my campus today after a long break. Rehearsals during the day and a performance at night, I just decided to stay the whole day. Getting ready I was running things through my mind of what to bring to eat that isn't packaged sugar and carbs. I wasn't coming up with anything and time was running out so I just decided to plan on buying a salad or something... which is 3-4 bucks but hey it's just one time right? I remember last year though trying to figure that out multiple times every week and often resorting to buying my food which after a while took a toll on my minimal college student account.

What do y'all do in the same dilemma? What are easy things a college student can pack in their bag to give them energy for the rest of the day... but is more than just some oatmeal parts glued together with sugar and peanut butter?

Inn the dorms, I kept a fridge stocked with yogurt, soy milk, and leftovers, freezer with every vegetable under the sun, and cabinet with rice, cereal, and pretzels.  I ate a lot of rice - not very healthy, but there could be worse.  I'd cook rice with, say, mushrooms and broccoli, and then pack it in Tupperware and bring it with me wherever I went.  I usually packed food.  If I was stuck out all day (and had training too) I'd usually get Subway - my reasoning being that something with bread would be less likely to get thrown up if I were punched in the stomach. Haha.  Odd.  Beyond that it feels healthier (whether it actually is) than anything with a lot of grease and fat.  Bang for your buck.  I would still recommend packing if you think you might be out all day.  A poor college student, my little rice meals were pennies, rather than dollars.  Rice and vegetables are cheap.

@tengalla - I like the idea of the rice and vegetables. And also chicken would be good in order to get protein in there as long as its able to remain chilled.

Where do you go to college?

@christine - Just a local community college. Not something big, ha

I'm not sure what you like to eat...but there are a few healthy choices that I've started making that are way good for you and that will help not to gain weight...

You can always pack apples/oranges or other fresh fruits. If you don't like to peel the oranges with your fingers, you can cut them at home with a knife into slices...and it doesn't take long to do. You just need zip lock baggies and a knife! Simple as that.

Also, tuna fish is really good for you, but you shouldn't eat it every day. However, you can bring that along and maybe even add it to a tossed salad to give you some protein.

Another thing that I've really really started to like lately are nuts! Nuts are sooo good for you, although high in fat. Nuts consist of good fats, though. Just take a small baggie of 20 macademia, almonds or cashews. Also very good for your digestive health are Brasil nuts. You don't need to eat many nuts to get a good boost of energy and to feel satisfied to get through your next class.

Anyway, I'm sure there are many more...but I'm writing a book here! Hope this helps.
