  • Does Your Style Affect Your Weight?

I wear fairly conservative clothes. I don't like showing a lot of skin and my style reflects that.

I also am not extremely thin. Not overweight by any means, just mid range for what I should be for my height and bone structure.

I've often said though that even if I liked showing a lot of skin, I'd feel self conscious about doing so because of my weight. I'm not one who has the tight toned arms and legs, but you can't tell that cause my clothes always cover it up. I've been out shopping with friends before as they're trying on swimsuits and what not and hear, "Well if I'm going to wear this I need to lose 10lbs..." And low and behold the next day they're on (another) diet. I don't like wearing clothes like that so I don't have the "I need to lose ___lbs...."

What do you think? Does your style of clothes affect your desire to be a certain weight or not?

Wait do you mean does my weight effect my style of clothes? I definitely dress really boring and plain and don't buy nice, cute clothes because I am overweight and I always tell myself I'm not going to buy nice, cute clothes until I lose "all the weight". Or I own a wardrobe of the next 2 smaller sizes so I don't want to buy clothes because I hope to wear them soon.

But your question makes me think....if I dressed in clothes that were stylish and cute-it would not doubt make me feel better. Would this in turn affect my weight? It would definitely improve my self esteem. But I'm not sure if it would somehow indirectly affect my weight? That is a very thought provoking question...maybe I should go shopping for Christmas! I hate all the clothes I have now: monochrome, boring t-shirts and plain colored plain styled shirts with jeans. I want something more stylish....but of course my only choices are Lane Bryant or the Avenue..

@andilee1976 - I think you should get some cute clothes. Doesn't mean they have to be revealing, but you can still have cute clothes and not have to expose a lot of skin. Conservative doesn't always mean boring and frumpy.

Try learning the colors that look best on you and get some clothes in them. I find that whenever I spend the little extra time to look nice I feel more confident about myself and therefore don't feel the need to eat as much. I'm still not as skinny as others around me, but I'm a healthy weight.

In general yes. But I think it's more like your weight affecting your style. I think people have to know what their body shape/weights are like and learn to see what works and what doesn't.
